Shorebased Courses
Day Skipper/Coastal Skipper Navigation Courses.
RYA Navigation Courses normally require about 42 hours of tuition and assessment. We now deliver RYA training in short packages to suit client schedules and include a more accessible 2-day introduction course to navigation for clients who cruise close to home. For individuals, groups, and discerning clients we specialise in private tuition at any suitable location worldwide. Please contact us to discuss details.
Our scheduled Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper navigation courses are mainly based in the North of England in purpose built modern classrooms at Pugneys Country Park and Watersports Centre, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, just off the M1 motorway, where we focus on weekend and 5-day intensive courses. New On Line Theory Courses
For those who have limited free time, or are unable to commit to a pre-programmed theory course, we now have new on line theory courses for both Day Skipper and Coastal/Yachtmaster Offshore. Now you can complete the theory in your own time, at your own pace in your own space in the comfort of your own home or surroundings. These courses differ from normal correspondence courses because they are internet based. You can instantly check your own work as you go and back up services are readily available in case of queries or difficulties.
How it works.....
We send you a theory pack with charts, books and general information. Included is a personal link to our own online theory web site, where all the lessons are laid out in an easy to understand way. You can check your own work as you go by clicking answer buttons. These include full colour pictures of the chart work etc. On successful completion of the course exercises we send you the end of course examination papers. Complete the examination on your own and return to us. Your RYA Course Completion Certificate is then forwarded to you once the examination papers are completed successfully and returned to us.
Should you have any difficulties we provide a full back up service whereby you can contact us by email or phone. Your questions will be dealt with promptly by a fully qualified RYA Instructor. We also have reciprocal arrangements with Allabroad Sailing Academy in Gibraltar, where if you wish you can put some of the theory into practice on a practical course before completing your final theory exams. In this case your instructor will check your theory and help you with any parts you may be having difficulty with, and when you are ready you can complete the exam.

VHF/SRC Radio Courses.
The introduction of G.M.D.S.S. (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) has brought about the need to revise the radio operator qualifications. We now offer the VHF GMDSS Short Range Certificate one-day course and assessment for £85 plus licence fee. These courses take place in modern purpose built classrooms using new Simrad RD80 training radios. Alternatively we can produce these courses for groups or individuals at a suitable venue of your choice by arrangement. This course is suitable for sailors, divers, sea kayakers, water sports enthusiasts, etc.

Howellsail provides Instructor services to some of the leading RYA Sea Schools in the UK and Mediterranean. Director Richard Howell has personally provided instruction and conducted Yachtmaster Examinations at RYA recognised Sea Schools based in Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent, Wales, Gibraltar, Menorca, Croatia, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. All RYA offshore sailing courses are run through our association with these sea schools. Our knowledge and contacts ensures that we utilise only what we consider are the best schools with well-maintained yachts and facilities. Yachtmaster Preparation
As a Yachtmaster Examiner, Richard Howell has the necessary experience and knowledge to provide that high level of training necessary to equip you with the necessary competence and skills required to obtain this prestigious award. We regularly run these skills development and Yachtmaster preparation courses in the UK and abroad. Next Yachtmaster Prep Course commences Sunday 24th October.
Own Boat Tuition
We conduct own boat tuition throughout the world. This can often be the most economical way to complete your training to suit your own particular needs. The advantages are that you can learn at a time to suit yourself, at your own pace, and at the same time get used to the handling of your own yacht, without the added pressures of being on a standard course. We charge a standard daily rate, so you can often involve family and friends together if you wish. Tailor Made Training.
At Howellsail we also recognise that everyone is an individual with differing needs, and can provide `tailor made` training. Utilising our associate sail training establishments in the UK and Mediterranean we are able to provide that all round experience with different sailing areas, different yachts, different crews, and even some dinghy sailing to develop those sailing skills.
